I have experience of teaching engaging and informative classes for all ages and abilities.  I have tutored art to a large number of students over the last five years.  My experience includes preparing students for Art Scholarships, GCSE, A Level, art school applications, BA Fine Art and helping to build confidence.  I have been Artist in Residence 2015 at North London Collegiate.  This involves teaching life drawing, lower sixth art classes and culminated in a solo show.  I have run successful creative workshops in the beautiful settings of Clifton Nurseries, National Trust’s Fenton House and in the City of London.

My approach to tutoring:

I really enjoy helping and inspiring students on their own creative journey.  Each class is designed around the student’s interests.  For example a still life project need not just be based on a bowl of fruit!  If the student likes cars, I can suggest a project based around engine parts or similar.  Art should not solely take place at the kitchen table or in an art room.  It is my role to bring the subject to life, share skills, help students develop their creativity and potentially find a subject that becomes a life long passion.

About me

Art is central to my life and I draw every day.  I grew up in an artistic family; my father is a sculptor and my grandparents were architects.  I was awarded an Art Scholarship to Millfield School and achieved top grades for GCSE and A Level in Art and Design.  I went on to study at Chelsea School of Art, London College of Fashion and Sir John Cass Art School.  I have been a professional artist for the last six years exhibiting widely as well as tutoring art to students.

My artwork has been shown at the Affordable Art Fair, Christies London and included in several group exhibitions at the Mall Galleries London.  To date I have had five solo shows, the most recent held at North London Collegiate School.  I plan to complete a Fellowship with Ballinglen Arts Foundation, County Mayo, Ireland in 2016.

I really enjoy tutoring art.  It is wonderful to share information about current exhibitions, think through problems creatively, critique work finding ways to move forward and help students develop their own skills.  Many of my students have achieved top grades at GCSE, A Level and won scholarships.

Hobbies and interests outside of tutoring:

When I am not tutoring you can find me in my studio located in Wandsworth drawing.  I create detailed drawings of nature within balanced, harmonious compositions.  The dramatic curve of a stem, a delicate collection of petals or variegated leaves inspire me to draw.  I sketch wherever I can, New Covent Garden Flower Market, world-class specimens in Kew Gardens or weeds on a London street.  I enjoy the spontaneity of drawing on site and communicating a sense of place.  I only feel that I fully understand something if I have drawn it.

Success story / case study

I helped a student put together a portfolio for an art scholarship.  She was brilliant at photography and creating sculptures, but none of this was in her portfolio.  Together we documented all of her sculptures, photographing them in locations around London that related to her existing drawings and paintings. This helped to create a portfolio that had a theme and linked from one page to the next.  I was delighted that she was awarded an art scholarship.

I was invited to help the same student through Art GCSE and prepare for her Art Exam. I arranged several pretend art exams where we would go through the project together. The student achieved A* at Art GCSE.

Venetia's Testimonials

Venetia has been wonderful for my daughter, whose technique has improved hugely under her guidance.  She is unfailingly patient, kind and encouraging, and is excellent at communicating clearly and getting to the heart of a problem.  She has been brilliant for my daughter’s self-confidence, while extending her awareness of the wonderful world of art.

Thanks again for the wonderful classes.  I’ve done the odd art class over the last couple of years, but not enjoyed any as much as yours.  It would be fab if you and Clifton Nurseries could team up again.
