How to Decide Between Studying at Home or Abroad

Studying abroad is a great opportunity for students to interact with various cultures, expand their world views, and strengthen their CVs. However, depending on your career goals and other financial and personal factors, completing your education in the UK may be a more appropriate choice if you’re a domestic student.

Below we have listed some key things to consider when deciding between studying at home or abroad.

Course options

Depending on your degree, studying abroad may allow you to pursue various courses that will better suit your interests and career goals. For example, universities in the US are particularly known for their wide range of programmes and prestigious universities, especially in the Maths and Science fields. Europe has also begun to offer an increased amount of classes in English, in order to appeal to UK students. Students in the Humanities or International Studies fields can especially benefit from the cultural insight that studying abroad provides. On the other hand, there are certain fields that can benefit more from studying at home. Students doing a course in English Literature, for example, will find a more extensive set of relevant course options by studying in the UK.

For many, the decision between studying abroad or staying at home comes down to finances; but fortunately, there are many options for tuition and living assistance for those wishing to travel for their education. While British universities can see tuition rates of £9,000 per year, prestigious universities abroad, especially in the US, can be extremely expensive. By contrast, universities in Europe can be comparatively affordable against UK rates. Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for government assistance to pay for your study abroad programme, especially if you are participating in Erasmus study. You can visit in order to determine if you qualify for financial assistance, and if so, how much. Applying for scholarships and grants is another great way to pay for your study abroad experience. You can also contact your desired university and ask about tuition assistance options that they offer for international students.

The US is known for their highly accredited, but expensive, Ivy League universities. An education abroad experience at a top ranking university is an outstanding credential to have when searching for a job after graduation. If, however, you wish to study in the US but do not have the financial ability to attend a top-ranking university, you may want to consider other state universities or universities in the Midwest which offer significantly lower tuition rates. While these universities are not top ranked, studying abroad at these institutions will still provide you with a valuable cultural experience. However, if university reputation is your top priority, and you have limited funds, you may want to consider staying at home or going to a university in Europe where you can receive a great education from a top ranking university for a much lower price than abroad in the States.

Depending on your courses, studying abroad may or may not be the best choice for you, but in general studying abroad is a great way to broaden your horizons and impress future employers.
