The Republican National Convention began earlier this week – and the opening speech has been plagued by accusations of plagiarism.
Melania Trump, wife of Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump, was appointed the opening speech slot at the convention. Giving a speech on her past as an immigrant to America and how it brought her to the present day, many found eery similarities to Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2008.
Trump’s campaign team have stated that the similarities are not signs of plagiarism, and credited the words to Melania and a team of writers; “In writing her beautiful speech, Melania’s team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking.” HSPS and PPE applicants should consider the role of speech writers in modern politics, particularly exceptions such as the Obamas who have written some of their own speeches in the past.
English applicants should investigate the concept of plagiarism, and how Melania’s speech did or did not fall into the bounds of plagiarism.
