As a professional private tutor & educational consultant since June 2013, I have over 3,000 hours of client facing experience, as well as many more hours preparing for sessions with clients, marking scripts, editing personal statements, report writing. For the past 15 months, I have tutored in the ‘virtual learning environment’, via Skype & Scribblar. This method encourages my clients to explain their thought process, rather than relying solely on showing me what they have written down, which is better for the development of their intellect, and also prepares them for an increasingly digital future.
My approach to tutoring
I mostly tutor the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, and my approach to such tutoring is based on the Engineering Mathematics problem solving approach of Erwin Kreyszig, a distinguished Engineering academic. His approach can be broken down into three stages:
- Modelling, i.e. translating information into the language of mathematics.
- Solving, i.e. selecting an appropriate mathematical tool to use.
- Interpreting, i.e. understanding the contextual meaning of the result of the mathematics.
Moreover, I am a fan of the Socratic method, which allows me to dismantle my client’s logic, allowing them to think critically about their thought process, and thus refine it.
I was a pupil at the Edinburgh Academy, where I achieved 5 A (band 1) grades at Scottish Higher level, before achieving AAA (pre-A*) at A-level. From there, I read Aerospace & Aerothermal Engineering at Pembroke College, Cambridge, especially enjoying papers in Fluid Mechanics, Partial Differential Equations & Variational Methods, Aerocoustics and Flow Instability.
Moreover, I am passionate about education, having particularly enjoyed the Supervision system at Cambridge, and look to emulate it with my clients. I tutor a variety of subjects right up to undergraduate level, which affords me the opportunity to keep on top of a wide range of interesting material, and apply it to my tutoring and educational consultancy, especially my Oxbridge and Russell Group admissions work, and am proud of my success rates. Additionally, I am a full member of The Tutors’ Association and through this am excited to help establish this relatively infantile profession.
Hobbies and interests outside of tutoring
I am a keen racquet sportsman, having played tennis, badminton, squash and table tennis since school. Specifically, I was fortunate enough to captain the Cambridge University Lawn Tennis Club collegiate team during the academic year 2010-2011, and enjoy matches with my former teammates whenever I can. I have been to Wimbledon to watch professional tennis over 10 times, and am looking forward to getting to the remaining 3 Grand Slams at some point. Especially memorable was Andy Murray’s loss to Roger Federer in the 2012 Championship match. The atmosphere was incredible and the precision of the tennis even more so. As an aviation enthusiast, my ‘anorak’ hobby is watching Air Crash Investigation and going to air shows whenever I can.
“Luke mentored my son through his Oxbridge applications and also offered career guidance to him. He's a very capable and supportive mentor who was able to build a solid rapport with my son and motivated him to do his best. I can highly recommend Luke.” – Parent of successful Oxford applicant
“Luke is a fantastic tutor. He is very professional, and is articulate with his explanations. After every session with Luke, I felt like I had learnt and gained a lot more understanding after one hour. Even after the sessions, he is willing to help. He is also kind and patient. I recommend him to anyone.
I have to give him credit because his help in interview practice helped me get an offer from Oxford as well as all of the other universities I applied too.” – Parent of successful Oxford applicant
“Luke is an outstanding tutor, very thorough and organised. He is well prepared for lessons and reports back on progress and future goals. He has been tutoring my daughter for her A2 Physics exams. They get on well and he makes the work understandable. She is now far more confident. He has also been very helpful with her exam technique.” – Parent of Physics A-Level student
“Luke was a great tutor. He was very accommodating with his session timings, including weekends and late evenings, to fit around my schedule; including a number of sessions via Skype as well as face-to-face meetings. After every session he would return detailed and constructive feedback promptly and was always available to help with queries outside of session times. As a mentor Luke was committed, supportive and genuinely interested in helping me succeed; I would recommend him to anyone. I feel this was invaluable interview preparation for me.”
“Luke spent several sessions with my son in the run up to AS Maths this year. In total, he had approximately 10 lessons over Skype. My son found the sessions extremely useful and feels they had a very positive outcome on his performance. We have arranged several more tutorials now to cover A2. From a parent's view point, I have found Luke pleasant, approachable and very reliable. He was great with my son. I would commend his services without reservation.” – Maths A-Level student, who achieved two As (95% and 100%)
“The results were amazing and we are continuing to use Luke's services for the foreseeable future - he is now assisting with the preparation of my daughter's personal statement and preparing her for the Physics Aptitude Test. Would highly recommend Luke's services.” – Parent of student who gained 100% in both examined AS Maths modules
“Luke was working with my son for his university admission. He was a very good tutor...very dedicated and helpful. He was also always available when my son needed him.” – Parent of student who got an offer from all top universities
“Luke is a fantastic tutor, his patience and ability to prioritise the student’s education and understanding over everything, is unbeatable, and I am yet to find a tutor who is able to do this so well. I felt completely safe in Luke's hands, as he is an extremely intelligent individual I knew that I was able to trust his judgments and advise to help further myself."
“Luke was very professional in his approach to preparing my son for an Oxbridge interview.. He was organised, thorough and challenging. We would highly recommend Luke as a mentor. My son has greatly improved his knowledge-base, communication skills and self-confidence.”
“Luke helped me in Maths and Physics, as well as advice on my overall application to universities. He was serious, clear and great to work with. I would highly recommend him!” - Student who received an offer from all the universities to which he applied
“Luke has been instrumental in preparing my daughter for the Physics Aptitude Test required for entry to Oxford University, and I am delighted to say that she has been offered a place at St Hughes College, Oxford. We shall be retaining Luke's services to ensure that she makes the required A Level grades for entry to Oxford. Luke has tutored all my daughter's sessions on Skype and although I initially was not sure whether this would work it has actually been a complete success. My daughter has found Luke to be an absolute delight to know. He is completely reliable and has helped our daughter to realise her dream of going to Oxford. A wealth of knowledge with regard to Oxbridge entry.” – Parent of successful Oxford applicant
One of my most satisfying private tuition jobs was helping a client who was applying to read Engineering Science at Oxford. We worked together over a period of 3 months to prepare for the PAT (Physics Aptitude Test), develop the personal statement, and prepare for the interviews. It was immensely rewarding to watch the client’s intellect grow as we tackled academically stimulating questions. Although reluctant to speak up at first, the client grew to become a confident, analytical problem solver who excelled at interview as they were ready for the challenge of a STEM degree at an elite university. The client matriculated earlier this year (2015).
