Experience

I have been teaching since graduating from Cambridge in 2012, and I am delighted to say that many of my hard-working students have had great success, receiving offers from some of the most competitive schools in the country. Other students have gone up a grade at GCSE level, attaining a B in English and Maths where they were predicted a C. I have also taught students all over the world, including in Turkey, Russia, France and the Philippines, as well as around the UK.

My approach to tutoring

Encouragement and praise is key to the way I teach.  Time has taught me that students don’t learn or improve when you criticise them, but when you praise them for things they do right, it has a profound impact on the way they write and the way they think. I always set goals for the following lesson that are small, fun, and focused on the most important areas for improvement.  I also try to make lessons fun and interactive, not just for young students but even right up to A Level and beyond.

About me

I studied Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 2012.  Following graduation I volunteered for work experience at several primary schools in a variety of age groups, teaching both the whole class and assisting individuals. I soon moved to London and began teaching professionally, providing one-to-one tutoring as well as teaching in schools.  I’ve really enjoyed seeing my students progress, particularly when I’ve seen students grow to love subjects they previously hated, like English, Maths, or even interview technique.

From 2008 to 2009 I travelled around the world, working as an au pair and residential tutor with a family of four in Grenoble (France), and also as a classroom assistant at an educational centre for street children in Cebu (Philippines).  Most recently I’ve been teaching in Turkey and Russia.

At A Level in 2008 I achieved three A grades, with nearly 100% in Music and French.  The previous year in 2007 I also achieved two A grades in Critical Thinking and Theatre Studies at AS Level.  In 2006 I achieved ten GCSE grades all at A* and A grade.

Hobbies and interests outside of tutoring

Outside of tutoring I am a keen composer, writer, director and performer.  I have met and performed for a huge variety of people, including: HRH Prince Philip, Mary Berry, Alexander Armstrong, Jamie Cullum, Derren Brown, Sir Trevor Nunn, Sir Nicholas Hytner, George Stiles & Anthony Drewe, with work featured all over the world, including in the West End and Royal Albert Hall, as well as at the Summum in Grenoble and C Venues in Edinburgh.  I am also an experienced magician, performing at children’s parties and private events, as well as Hamleys and Harrods.

Case study

Matt (8+)

Matt had only recently arrived in the UK with his Russian family.  Matt was extremely bright, and excellent at Maths, but didn’t enjoy English comprehension or creative writing.  I focused our lessons on quick and easy techniques for him to collect more points in exams (e.g. more star words and more connectives in creative writing, and more quote copying in comprehension) and encouraged Matt to appraise his own work.  Because the goals were so simple and the marking strategy so focused, Matt started to see improvement straight away. Matt received offers from some of the best schools in the country, including a reserve offer from Colet Court, and is now top in the class in English and Maths.
