Skills and achievements:

I studied Jurisprudence at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 2007 with first class honours and the Gibbs Prize for highest achievement in Contract, Tort, Land and Trust Law examinations. I then studied at LAMDA and now work as professional actor, where I have toured internationally with Cheek By Jowl, performed in three productions in London’s West End, and worked on numerous roles on television and film.

All of my work hinges on confidence, be it onstage, working with teams or leading a group. As the JCR President of Oxford’s largest college student union I was responsible for a team of over twenty people, an annual turnover of £100,000, and led campaigns on a variety of student and wider-world issues, as well as managing a committee responsible for running various student services. Excellent public speaking and presentation skills, confidence and enthusiasm were all needed to foster a passion for whatever the team was working on.

Experience:

I’ve worked as a private tutor for nearly ten years, across a variety of subjects from Maths to Public Speaking, and have over 1500 hours of tutoring experience. I now specialise in confidence coaching, in order to help students prepare for intimidating situations, ranging from school and university examinations and interviews, to public speaking competitions. I put a strong emphasis on long-term, self-generated strategies to boost confidence, which ensures that my work with the student is beneficial both for the immediate enterprise and their future careers. I am experienced in both one-to-one tuition and classroom environments, with clients from a variety of backgrounds with a range of previous academic achievements.

My approach to tutoring:

I am passionate about helping people achieve their full potential. My study of Jurisprudence alongside my career as an actor has afforded me broad and in-depth academic experiences across a number of fields. I combine a detailed knowledge of the humanities and arts with a firm commitment analytical and logical reasoning. Above all, I focus on confidence, ensuring my students feel supported and sure of their abilities. I bring an honest and essential passion for the subject in which I am working with all my tutees, and hope I can foster something similar in them.

Hobbies and interests outside of tutoring:

In my spare time I enjoy cooking, especially trying out new cuisines and exploring esoteric ingredients. I enjoy reading, particularly mid-Century American novelists, hiking (in the summer of 2015 I spent a month walking the Camino Del Norte across northern Spain) and I volunteer with the Stoke Newington homeless shelter and help run a humanitarian aid organisation that takes essential supplies and respite relief (in the form of a pop-up cinema) to ‘The Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais, France.

Success story / case study

Last year I worked with a GCSE student who had been predicated a number of ‘fails’ and dishearteningly low grades. This had exacerbated her lack of self-belief, and she had significant confidence issues related to failure, which had impacted her motivation in both her school work and in other non-academic areas of her life. We worked twice a week across all subjects, combining subject-specific tutoring with exam and revision skills and specific confidence coaching. She passed all her exams, achieving a variety of grades between A and C.

He is the most professional, knowledgeable, reliable & punctual tutor that I have ever used. My daughter was predicted a number of fails in her GCSEs, but passed all 9 of them with A-C grades having worked with Jack.” [Mother of GCSE Student]
